  2.                                 THE LAKE. TO --

  5.        In spring of youth it was my lot
  6.        To haunt of the wide world a spot
  7.        The which I could not love the less-
  8.        So lovely was the loneliness
  9.        Of a wild lake, with black rock bound,
  10.        And the tall pines that towered around.
  11.  
  12.        But when the Night had thrown her pall
  13.        Upon that spot, as upon all,
  14.        And the mystic wind went by
  15.        Murmuring in melody-
  16.        Then- ah then I would awake
  17.        To the terror of the lone lake.

  19.        Yet that terror was not fright,
  20.        But a tremulous delight-
  21.        A feeling not the jewelled mine
  22.        Could teach or bribe me to define-
  23.        Nor Love- although the Love were thine.
  24.  
  25.        Death was in that poisonous wave,
  26.        And in its gulf a fitting grave
  27.        For him who thence could solace bring
  28.        To his lone imagining-
  29.        Whose solitary soul could make
  30.        An Eden of that dim lake.
